The transformation into a real manufacturing city is very much in the spotlight. In an increasing number of area development projects, the question is coming to the fore of how we can combine living and working in a smart, future-proof and affordable way. The key issue is: how do we prevent residential development from pushing out the urgently needed business activity in the city? Amsterdam-based projects such as Draka, Shipdock and de Hamerkop illustrate this tension. They are all places where manufacturing, urban densification and quality of life must come together, amid growing spatial and financial pressure.

During PROVADA, Fresh Professionals is therefore organising an in-depth panel discussion on the manufacturing city, led by Ruben Maes. What does it mean to give production businesses a place within high urban densities? Which types of economic activity are well suited to being integrated with residential uses? How do we keep space for makers affordable? And what innovative financing and operating models are needed to make the manufacturing city financially viable as well? From the perspectives of designers, developers, public authorities and entrepreneurs, we will explore the opportunities and obstacles of this urban transformation.
