Netherlands has around 250 kilometres of motorway that once lay outside the city but, due to urbanisation, has become part of the urban fabric. What does this mean for the living environment along this infrastructure? And what opportunities arise when we connect the city and the motorway more effectively? In this breakfast session, AM, the ministry and the knowledge platform SSRO will discuss the future of urban motorways and the development opportunities that follow from this. Using recent design research into, among other things, the A12 and A16, we show which spatial interventions are possible: from decking over and bridging to separating and moving underground. We also address the affordability of this type of interventions and the role of public-private cooperation. With practical examples, including Quatrebras, we explore how governments and market parties can work together to create a better living environment and new development opportunities along urban motorways.
