The increasing frequency of extreme weather events such as heatwaves, drought and flooding is forcing the real estate sector to take action. We will need to make our cities and buildings resilient to the impacts of climate change. Consideration must be given to the effects of sea level rise, land subsidence and the availability of drinking water when choosing the location for new developments. Extreme weather often results in damage running into many millions of euros each year. However, investments are also required to make the built environment climate-adaptive.

Is delivering climate-resilient real estate a realistic mission, or an impossible task? What costs are involved and what will it ultimately deliver? And, of course, can we ensure that it remains affordable for everyone?

In this session, provided by Rotterdams Weerwoord (the climate adaptation programme of the Municipality of Rotterdam) in cooperation with the Dutch Green Building Council, we aim to find answers on the costs and benefits of climate-adaptive measures in area and real estate development.

Speakers:

  • Guido Slokkers (Municipality of Rotterdam)
  • Jan Kadijk (DGBC)
