Martijn Steenstra

Martijn Steenstra is an advisor on climate adaptation and an Expert Leader within Sweco’s knowledge program Urban Insight. Urban Insight focuses on knowledge development concerning European urban areas. It connects knowledge and brings experts together to develop new holistic insights for Sweco’s clients. The goal is to contribute to the knowledge development about the cities of the future, from a resident’s perspective, based on facts and data about European cities. Themes within Urban Insight include healthy and safe cities, digitalization, energy transition, climate adaptation, smart and sustainable mobility, and circularity. In 2020, Urban Insight emphasizes Climate Action. Martijn oversees the development of six thematic reports on Climate Action, developed by international teams of Sweco experts. Martijn Steenstra began his career as a water manager and has been working since 2009 on sustainable urban development. He advises as a process facilitator in policymaking and in designing master plans. Over the years, he has advised large cities such as Ho Chi Minh City, Jakarta, and Kuala Lumpur on climate adaptation. He developed the Climateapp and the climate label ‘State of Your Street,’ which are used in various cities. Martijn Steenstra has a background in land and water management from Wageningen.
