Over Matthijs van Dijk

Prof. Ir. Matthijs van Dijk (1965, The Netherlands) founded the Amsterdam based design consultancy Reframing Studio in 1992. Reframing Studio advises companies, non-profit organizations, and governments how to maintain their competitive or societal position through the development of meaningful new products, services and policies. Reframing Studio won the ‘Rotterdam Design prize’ in 2014, the most prestigious design prize in the Netherlands. Reframing Studio is a sister company to Gran Studio in Turin (Italy).

With this background as Master of Science in Robotics engineering (Eindhoven University of Technology) and post-doctorate in Consumer Products, Matthijs was appointed Professor of ‘Applied Design’ at Delft University of Technology in 2003. From 2018 his chair at TU Delft is redefined to ‘Mobility Design’. In 2013, Matthijs was also appointed Professor of ‘Strategic Design’ at NTNU in Trondheim (Norway), and today holds both part time chairs. Matthijs is associated with the Delft Design for Values Institute.

Matthijs is a thinker in methods underlying the design profession. He is a frequent speaker (national and international) and highly regarded member of juries and committees. He is also one of the founders and former board members of the Design and Emotion Society. In 2011, Matthijs and Paul Hekkert co-authored a book about the innovation methods they developed at Delft University if Technology: Vision in Design, a guidebook for innovators (Bis Publishers).
